1942 Bisher's column about Max Lanier
When pitcher Max Lanier made a splash in big league baseball in May 1940, Furman Bisher was beginning to make a name for himself in sports journalism. "James F. can still remember how they used to send down to the Lanier farm to get Max to come up and pitch for old Nappie Cashatt's Denton team--and how his [Max's] father would say, 'You tell 'em no. He ain't coming. And say he's not coming any more. I won't have him running around fooling with baseball. Won't get him anywhere.'" Writer Burke Davis continued, "And today Hubert Max [Lanier] will be making more in a month than the whole corn crop of the old days used to bring in to the Lanier family."
After Max Lanier and his St. Louis Cardinal's beat the Yankees in the 1942 World Series, Furman Bisher featured his old classmate in the column below.
