1950s The Forsaken Son
Furman's First Son, Nick Bisher
Furman was a good man, a great writer, but he was not perfect. He was a sinner just like the rest of us. He became a father in 1954 when he married Montyne Green and legally adopted her 5 year old son, Ronald Nicholson Green--Nicky. When Nicky became a teenager, he got in trouble for smoking cigarettes, skipping school and running around with older girls. Furman packed him off to Riverside Military Academy. When Furman and Montyne divorced in 1965, Furman "disowned" 14 year old Nicky. In later years, Furman would often boast of single-handedly raising three boys, but avoided any mention or thought of Nicky, his first son. Failure, whether parental or professional, was a bitter pill for a perfectionist like Furman.
